Communicators think Twitter is a fad, poll says
Lack of time or staff coupled with cautious management delay creation of a plan
If you’re guilty of jumping on the Twitter bandwagon, you’re not alone.
A recent eMarketer study projects Twitter users will reach 18.1 million by 2010. Twitter users already number more than 12.1 million.
But not everyone believes Twitter’s popularity will rise.
A recent poll of communicators conducted by Ragan Communications and PollStream found that 54 percent of 702 respondents claim Twitter is a fad and will plateau.
“[It’s a fad] because everybody’s doing it,” says Bob Hirschfeld, senior public information officer for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. “Ashton Kutcher and CNN have a steady supply of fans who want to know what they do. People like us, people with a job to do, every so often we do something of interest to the general public [but] we don’t have that steady supply of stuff that the public is interested in.”
Bing Beats Google to the Punch, Launches Twitter Search
Microsoft Corp.’s Bing has beaten Google Inc. to the punch.
Google has been rumored to be casting an eye toward creating a tool for searching social networking sites, like Twitter. But today, Bing came out and did it.
1. Begin with the letters RT. Don’t waste valuable characters (you’ve only got 140) with preambles such as “Retweet.” 2. Give credit to the source of the tweet by using @author, where “author” is the Twitter username of the person you are referencing. Sometimes there will be multiple names attached because it’s been passed along so many times; make sure you are keeping the original source if you trim the chain of users. 3. When linking to something, shorten the URL you are referencing through a tool such as http://ow.ly or http://is.gd. 4. Use the remaining characters to explain the point of view or the link in the original tweet, preserving the spirit of what the source said. 5. Think twice before retweeting sensitive material or information that may be untrue. You don’t want to embarrass people or spread lies. 6. Think about whether what you retweet will have relevance to any of your followers before posting. And avoid spam — it’s all over the Web.
